Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV strengthens MMNZ plug-in hybrid range.

26 May, 2021

Eclipse Cross PHEV represents a stylish new addition to, and significant expansion of, Mitsubishi’s plug-in hybrid range.

Mitsubishi Motors New Zealand (MMNZ) announces the arrival in June of the all-new Eclipse Cross PHEV in a significant expansion of its class-leading plug-in hybrid offering and now backed by Mitsuishi’s 10-year Diamond Advantage warranty

Built on the same second-generation drivetrain as the best-selling Outlander PHEV, the all-new Eclipse Cross PHEV delivers what MMNZ Head of Marketing and Corporate Affairs, Reece Congdon, describes as “the perfect cross between fuel-free, around-town driving and high-performance, open-road adventure”.

With a convenient EV range of up to 55km for the daily commute and a combined range of up to 650km for more far-flung escapades, Eclipse Cross PHEV is engineered to deliver the best of both worlds at a value to suit young professional lifestyles – and with 75% less CO2 emissions than the petrol version.

“Eclipse Cross occupies a distinct position in our range for those who want the style, value and capability of a smaller SUV without the family-sized space of Outlander,” said Congdon. “We are excited to introduce a PHEV option in this segment for the increasing number of drivers for whom more sustainable transport solutions are a key consideration.”

With a special launch price of $49,990 (plus ORC), MMNZ is confident the new Eclipse Cross PHEV will join Outlander PHEV as a highly popular choice for environmentally minded motorists.

Proven performer

The drivetrain is the same 2.4L twin electric motor S-AWC configuration found in the best-sellingOutlander PHEV – a system proven over seven years on New Zealand roads.

That’s the same combined electric motor output of 130kW in a smaller package, powered by ahigh-capacity 13.8 kWh lithium-ion battery and supported by a 94kW / 199Nm 2.4L engine.

Unlike many competitors, the Eclipse Cross PHEV system is EV rather than engine-based. This means that, in all modes, the motors deliver drive force to each axle for a quiet and smooth driving experience across the board, with no shift shock when the engine kicks in.

In Series Hybrid Mode the engine is only used to generate electric power, while in Parallel Hybrid Mode it is assisted by the motor for greater fuel efficiency.

To make life even easier for drivers, the PHEV system automatically selects the most efficient drive mode based on the situation for dynamic and secure performance at every turn.

Fast charger

Mitsubishi Motors has been invested in offering Kiwis an affordable and practical plug-in electric vehicle option since Outlander PHEV arrived in 2014. Since then, there has been significant improvements to New Zealand’s charging infrastructure, with more than 250 Fast Charge stations around the country. This network, which enables a quick battery recharge from 0 to 80% in around
25 minutes, continues to grow and has broadened the possibilities for PHEV owners looking to go further in pure EV mode.

Charging can also be done via a household outlet in approximately seven hours, or in around four hours using Mode 3 charging.

Standout style

The PHEV model sets itself apart from its petrol counterpart thanks to body-colour bumpers and side skirts on the VRX, and silver front and rear lower garnishes on the premium XLS model.

Both variants sport a unique alloy wheel design with fuel-efficient Bridgestone Ecopia rubber on the rims.

Inside XLS models, new high-grade fabric upholstery with leather trim ups the style stakes, with heated front seats and, in the VRX model, a heated steering wheel, well-timed for the winter months ahead.

Pre-heating, defrosting or cooling can be initiated via a smartphone app for added convenience, as can the charging timer.

Safe and sound

Both models are equipped with Forward Collision Mitigation, Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Lane Change Assist for improved safety and greater peace of mind.

An 8” Smartphone Link Display Audio system enables hands-free mobile connectivity and entertainment, along with handy PHEV status screens and navigation.

Eclipse Cross PHEV is also backed by MMNZ’s 10-year / 160,000km powertrain warranty, plus an eight year / 160,000km Li-ion battery warranty.

Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV features;

  • EV range of up to 55km
