Hyundai IONIQ 5 named New Zealand Car of the Year

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 won big at the prestigious 2022 World Car Awards overnight, with the all-electric named World Car of the Year, World Electric Vehicle of the Year and World Car Design of the Year.

IONIQ 5 was recognised by a jury of 102 automotive journalists from 33 countries around the world. The innovative battery electric vehicle (BEV), which has already won New Zealand Car of the Year, won all three categories in which it was nominated.

“We’re absolutely thrilled that the New Zealand Car of the Year, IONIQ 5, is now the 2022 World Car of the Year,” said Hyundai New Zealand General Manager – Passenger Cars, Chris Blair.

“Hyundai Motor Company has succeeded in creating an exceptional vehicle that stands out among its competitors. Kiwis have really taken to the IONIQ 5, with a high volume of interest to our website as well as orders.”

Hyundai Motor plans to introduce 11 new Hyundai BEV models by 2030 and aims to boost annual global BEV sales to 1.87 million units by 2030.

IONIQ 5 has also won German Car of the Year, UK Car of the Year, Auto Express’ Car of the Year and Auto Bild’s Electric Car of the Year, and the first-ever Best Cars of the Year 2021/2022 Awards.

The World Car of the Year jury selected IONIQ 5 from an entry list of 28 vehicles. Vehicles must be produced in at least 10,000 units per year, priced below the luxury level in their primary markets, and on sale in at least two major markets on at least two continents at some time between Jan. 1, 2021 – Mar. 30, 2022.
